Background

Dometic is a Swedish company with roots in Electrolux, known for creating smart, reliable solutions for life on the move — from RVs and boats to outdoor adventures.

In late 2024, Dometic launched a major redesign to unify more product areas under one brand, led by the digital creative agency Barkas.

In March 2025, Vaimo — the implementation partner — brought me in to improve the UX flow for finding and purchasing mounted car racks.

The challenge

Dometic’s main challenge was helping customers find the right product. With numerous mounting solutions varying by car brand, model, year, and variant, selecting a vehicle is key to a smooth shopping experience. This selection shouldn’t limit browsing, but it must remain clearly accessible whenever users need it.

The challenge

Once you’ve selected a vehicle, your choice is remembered — ensuring all options and recommendations stay tailored to your make. If you have multiple vehicles saved, switching between them is effortless. This creates a smooth, seamless experience for both new and returning customers.

Select your vehicle

With numerous mounting solutions varying by car brand, model, year, and variant, selecting your vehicle is essential for a smooth shopping experience on Dometic. Continuously prompting new users — and remembering returning ones — is key to a seamless flow.

Once selected

Once you’ve selected your vehicle, all options and recommendations adapt to your make. If you have multiple vehicles saved, you can easily switch between them from the interface.

SEARCH overlay

The search overlay displays products, suggestions, and guides you to the brand and model page where you can find your exact vehicle variant.

The process

Barkas had delivered strong design work across the site. However, the design and strategy weren’t tailored to the specific UX challenges of racks and their accessories. Some design decisions needed to be reconsidered to create a smoother customer journey.

Challenging established design patterns can create tension, but when done for the right reasons, it often leads to better design and a more complete user experience.

The design collaboration worked smoothly, and a few minor adjustments led to a user experience that better accommodated different customer journeys.

PLP and PDP

From the product landing page, users can easily select their car using the vehicle selector. Additional filters, such as activity, help narrow down options even further. Once a car is selected, each product card and product page clearly indicate whether the item fits the chosen vehicle.
